Things I Use For Better Night Sleep

This pandemic provides us a lot of time to think and reflect. It’s important to remind ourselves that taking care of our bodies doesn’t only consist of diet and exercise, but sleep too. Poor sleep has an immediate and significant impact on your hormones, brain function, and even weight. It can also affect how you treat your quarantine buddy- if you have one- by influencing your mood. Lately, I’ve been finding it difficult myself to get a good night’s sleep. I’m struggling to feel tired after a day spent at home. I know I can’t be alone. Fortunately, these trying times provide us the opportunity to find a nighttime ritual that works for us. Here are some products and helpful tips I use nightly to ensure I wake up rested and ready to face the day.

Koala Browser

This app helps block out blue light on your phone or computer screen. Blue light has a huge effect on your circadian rhythm, tricking your brain into thinking it’s still daytime. In other words, this prevents your brain from producing and releasing necessary hormones for sleep (ie. melatonin). There are several ways you can reduce blue-light exposure in the evening: Stop watching TV, put away your hand-help electronics and turn off any bright lights 2 hours before heading to bed.

Deep Sleep Pillow Spray

It’s been posited by many sleep therapists that the bedroom atmosphere is a critical aspect for a good night’s sleep; for me, a soothing aroma is absolutely necessary. I love the scent of lavender, it’s calming and therapeutic. I sought for healthy ways to add the scent to my bedding without hurting myself or the environment.

When we sleep our skin repairs cells and removes harmful toxins. This makes sleep the ultimate beauty secret, and the first step, in your skincare routine. With this knowledge behind me, I finally came across a pillow spray safe enough to be around my skin at night. The spray has a blend of lavender, vetivert, and chamomile to calm both mind and body. About 20 minutes before getting into bed, I spray all my pillows and top of my sheet. Then, when I’m actually in bed, ready for sleep, I’ll spray 1 more time just to freshen the scent -Zzzzzz I’m out!

Slip Silk Pillowcase

The place you spend nearly one-third of your time while on this lovely planet—your bed. So, it would only make sense that you’d want it to be comfortable and healthy as possible. I use Slip silk pillowcases. For one, silk is hypoallergenic, meaning if you suffer from allergies, this is great for you! Also (me being OCD)- the fibers have a natural resistance to dust mites, mold and other allergens (EW). Secondly, silk is a safer alternative when it comes to the material pressed against your hair and face all night long. Cotton pillowcases are super absorbent- Yeah, so that skincare routine you spent 10 minutes applying just got sucked up by your pillow. Silk is less absorbent and full of amino acids. The amino acids create a bond with the keratin (something your body produces naturally) to help regenerate your skin as you sleep. Finally, silk is not only beneficial to your skin but also your hair, helping to make it less frizzy when you wake up by reducing breakage.

Slip Silk Sleep Mask

Your body is naturally programmed to crave sleep in the dark. When getting ready for bed, I try to use minimal lights in my house, and if I must, I dim them as much as possible. This signals to your brain that its time for sleep, and it’s an important habit to encourage a more restful night. When it’s time for sleep, I hide any course of light with a dark sleep mask. Even something you may not consider to be bright, such as an alarm clock or a bathroom nightlight, can easily disrupt melatonin levels in the brain. And by using silk, just like my pillowcase, it ensures my pricey eye-cream is doing the trick.
